Admission and Discharge

If your treatment, whatever its nature, requires you to be admitted to Al Salam Hospital, there is an admission procedure according to the department through which you will be admitted.

Admission in case of emergency
A patient may be admitted to the hospital due to a surgery or a medical emergency. In this case, it may be preferable for the patient to be accompanied by a member of his family or one of his friends, as they can help us a lot in obtaining information about his medical history of the patient and the circumstances surrounding his emergency case. Therefore, their presence is necessary to handle all legal and administrative details.


Elective admission

The elective admission is planned in advance. The patient is admitted to the hospital according to his choice, if the delay in admission does not represent a threat to his life (or her life), or until a vacant bed is available for the patient. This method allows for pre-admission examinations and evaluation of the cases calculating the estimated costs, obtain approval and set an appointment for the operation.


Financial categories of patient:


- Cash payment patients:


The patient or his representative pays an advance payment upon signing the admission contract that he will pay for the treatment in cash.


- Credit payment patients:

This applies when there is coverage for treatment in Al Salam Hospital by the patient's employer or sponsor (if there is an ongoing financial agreement with us), and this category requires prior approval before patient admission.


- Insured patient:


This applies when the patient's treatment in the hospital is covered by an insurance company that has an ongoing contract with the hospital. This category also requires prior approval.


The required documents that must be in your possession on admission time.


- The patient’s civil card in all cases and the civil card of the companion or his representative on admission and the authorized one to sign the admission legal document and surgical consents.

The insurance card is valid.
- A pre-written hospital admission sheet by your attending physician.
- Any x-rays, their reports, and test reports that were previously made, especially for your admission to the hospital.
- Sufficient amount of money for a down payment, which is not less than 50% of the estimated value of your stay in the hospital, in case of patients who do not have health insurance coverage.


Delivery cases admission:


- A pre-written hospital admission slip by the treating doctor.
- Valid Civil ID of the husband and wife, as well as whoever acts on behalf of the patient on admission.
- The original marriage contracts.
- Nationality of husband and wife for Kuwaiti citizens.

- Passports of the husband and wife for non-Kuwaitis, in addition to valid Kuwaiti civil cards.
- The marriage contract is translated into Arabic and attested by the relevant authorities for non-Kuwaiti citizens.
- The insurance card is valid in all cases for insurance patients.
- Sufficient amount of money for a down payment on admission time.


What to bring


As Al Salam Hospital is well-equipped to make your stay completely comfortable. You will only need to bring a few things with you, the most important of which is a list of the medications you are currently taking. Do not bring any medications to the hospital unless the doctor gives instructions to do so.
You just have to bring your own things, for example, a robe, non-slippery slippers, sleepwear, underwear, reading materials, and you will be provided with the patient’s clothing.
Valuable items, jewelry, credit cards, or large amounts of money should not be brought, as the patients are responsible for losing them.


Your stay with us: What to expect?


Before admission:

When an appointment is set for a patient to go through the procedures to be treated at Al Salam Hospital, our admission office will verify the validity of the insurance, and we will also work directly with the relevant insurance company or the employer to ensure that all the required approvals have been made before admission. A representative of the hospital may also contact the patient or guardian if there are questions or matters related to the approval of the insurance company.


The Stay:


During your hospitalization, you will stay either in a room of your choice while the admission procedures are being made. The room has all amenities that make the duration of your treatment and stay very comfortable. If the required room is not available, you will be informed of the alternative until the required room becomes available.

Food:

All-day room service allows inpatients to have various types of food and beverages, and any patient may request recommended food menus according to his medical needs. We ensure that there are experienced dietitians to supervise any foods prepared according to your nutritional requirements.
They are also added to your bill or paid in cash as you choose.
Meals are also available for visitors upon request, but electrical appliances such as kettles or toasters should not be brought.


Patient Identification Bracelet

The patient is provided with a bracelet that includes patient identification details. For your safety, you will be asked to wear the identification bracelet on your wrist throughout your stay in the hospital. Please make sure that your data in the identification bracelet is correct and do not remove this bracelet only after you leave the hospital.

Cancel an appointment/reschedule admission and surgery date
If it is decided to postpone the date of surgery or admission to the hospital, you will be notified of the reason and an appointment will be set for you with the doctor to set another date for the surgery.
It is very important to inform the hospital if you are unable to come to the hospital on the set time for admission. Please inform the admission office by phone in case you are unable to attend on time.


Settling your bills


If your stay in the hospital requires payment these costs will be fulfilled upon your admission to the hospital, and they will be estimated and not final, and if any additional fees related to your stay/ treatment plan in the hospital are due, they will be met upon your discharge from the hospital. To obtain an estimate of the costs of the stay in the hospital before admission, you can contact the admission office around the clock to inquire about all procedures. For the patient's convenience, the hospital accepts payments due in cash or by bank credit cards, or by checks accepted for payment, in addition to the facilities described above, ATMs have been placed on the ground floor at the hospital entrance.


Patient rooms


As Al Salam Hospital provides various rooms that have been carefully established to suit all the patients’ needs and to ensure their comfort throughout their treatment and stay in the hospital. These rooms vary and are divided into degrees according to the contents of each one, its decorations, and the furnishings in which it is prepared between individual rooms to distinctive high-luxury hotel suites.


Phone calls


There is a phone line (designated for each patient) so that he can make and receive calls in his room. Local phone calls are free of charge. Calls can be made by dialing the number (9) and then the requested number.

Identifying the special needs


The attending physician will search and identify any special tools that you may need to use due to your illness after your discharge from the hospital, to provide you with everything you need and facilitate your daily life.

Discharging from the hospital against medical advice and refusing treatment or surgeries:

The patient has the right to make decisions related to his health, including accepting or refusing to receive the recommended treatment or discharge from the hospital voluntarily and against medical advice.
If you decide to refuse treatment or leave the hospital voluntarily, the concerned person will explain the consequences of your decisions and will ask you to sign an acknowledgment whereby you shall bear the consequences of these decisions and a copy of which will be kept in your medical file.


Discharge from the hospital


Time of discharge
When the attending doctor decides that your health condition allows you to leave the hospital, the in-charge nurse for your health care will inform you with any special instructions that the doctor recommends regarding your case, and if you have any concerns about leaving the hospital, inform the nurse about that.
It is very important to leave the room by 12:00 PM, so that hospital staff can prepare the room to receive another patient. We recommend that you call someone to help and escort you from the hospital to your home before your discharge from the hospital.



Before your discharge, you will be notified with the following:


- In case of newborns

After completing the discharge procedures, the father shall head to the birth registration office on the first floor to receive the baby’s notification, to submit it to the concerned authorities to obtain a birth certificate for the newborn. The required documents of the father will be explained to him by the designed employee.

- In case of given prescriptions


When you are discharged from the hospital, the in-charge nurse will deliver the prescriptions to you. All the medications recommended by your doctor at the time of discharge will be explained by the clinical pharmacist. For your convenience, Al-Salam International Hospital has made these prescriptions possible from the hospital pharmacy, which works around the clock.

Post-discharge OPD follow appointment


The nurse will arrange the procedures for your medical follow appointments at the OPD, if necessary, and according to the recommendations of the attending physician. The nurse will register the date of appointment on your discharge summary and shall hand it over to you at the time of your discharge from the hospital.



Payment of service fees


Payment of the payable fees (if any) for the services provided to you during your hospital stay. You can pay the fees in cash or by credit card at the discharge office.



Wheelchair and porter services


When you leave the hospital, the nurse will prepare a wheelchair to transfer you to the car that will take you to transfer your personal belongings from the room to the car. You can call the customer relations or hospitality department to send the porters who will transfer the luggage to the patient’s car.

Smoking

In order to preserve the health and safety of the hospital’s visitors, and the laws in force within the hospital regarding smoking, smoking is prohibited in all facilities, and this prohibition includes the employees, patients and their visitors.

Safety measures

Electrical appliances


According to the safety standards applied at Al-Salam International Hospital, the use of electrical devices that the patient brings with him outside the hospital is strictly prohibited. Patients are allowed to use only electric devices that run on batteries. And all patient rooms contain safety instructions to be followed in case of emergency.



Nurse call bell
The patient can call the in-charge nurse by pressing a call bell that has been installed next to each bed in all patient rooms, and there is also a rope connected to a similar bell in the bathroom of each room to call the nurse when the patient needs an assistance while he is in the bathroom.



Emergency Safety Instructions
The patient should identify the emergency exits through a depicted direction maps, which is fixed in all the hallways of the hospital and patient rooms. The hospital periodically runs safety checks with mock emergency exercises. In the event that you hear the alarm bell announcing the emergency, stay in your room and keep your calm and wait for instructions from the hospital staff, as the hospital staff are trained to protect patients in various emergencies situation.
If the event of a fire, please follow the instructions of the hospital staff. Stay calm and if you are asked to leave the area, go to the nearest fire emergency exit and go to the emergency assembly point to which you will be directed. If you are unable to move, hospital staff will provide you with transportation to the assembly area outside the hospital.


In case of fire, the elevator is not used. Use the closest stairs to your room.


Due to the fire risks associated with the use of incense and candles, the use of any of them in patient rooms is strictly prohibited. Remember that the atmosphere in patient rooms is saturated with oxygen and sensitive medical devices, so any flame in the room may cause an explosion.


Regulations for patients' attendants
Based on the recommendations of the attending physician, one attendant is allowed to stay and overnight with you to assist you while you are in the hospital, and the attendants are not allowed to enter the critical/intensive care units at the times specified by the hospital administration only.

Visiting Hours & Instructions

As Al Salam Hospital believes in placing the health and comfort of patients as one of the most important priorities, and that the support of family and friends is very important in patients’ recovery, so the following hours were set for visiting patients as follows:


Visiting Hours & Instructions:

• The hospital recommends reducing number of the daily visitors in order to preserve the health condition and provide the patient with the necessary care.

• In the event that the visitor(s) or family members disturb or harm the patient, visitors and staff or engaged in unsafe behavior, the unit employees may ask the visitor(s) to leave the building.

• Any visitor under the age of 12 who is anywhere in the hospital, including the patient's room, must be supervised by an adult
• One family member may accompany the patient all times.

• However, in the event of other emergency codes or clinical restrictions, the security personnel may ask the accompanying person to leave.

• Family members my visit the floors at the following times: from 10 am to 10 pm.

• Visiting hours for intensive care: from 10.30 am to 12 pm and from 6.30 pm to 8 pm.


Infection control:

To make the environment safe and comfortable for the patient, the following procedures must be observed:
• Visitors who suffer from cold symptoms, infectious diseases, or they have been exposed to an infectious disease may be asked to postpone the visit until these symptoms disappear.

• When a child visit the hospital, he must be checked to make sure that he doesn’t suffer from any symptoms or illnesses. Family members should be aware that newborns can be at risk when exposed to illnesses in hospitals.

• An isolation guideline shall be made for visiting patients in preventive isolation and people with immunodeficiency to direct the visitors to go to the nurse for guidance. The nurse will give them instructions on how to use the protective gear. Accordingly, visitors should keep in mind to wash their hands before and after visiting the patient.

• Except for some cases, children under the age of 12 shouldn’t visit isolation rooms.
